Sonoma Valley High School students are rehearsing for their 2024 fall play, Almost, Maine. The play, a series of short vignettes from John Carriani, is directed by SVHS English teacher Jane Martin.
The play is set in a remote mythical town called Almost, Maine on a deep winter night. The people in the town fall in and out of love in hilariously unexpected ways as the northern lights hover magically overhead.
The performance allows the theater program to continue on campus after Drama was cut as a class for the 2024-25 school year.
The students in the play are hoping to inspire others to join drama through this play. Their ultimate goal is reinstating Drama as a class. Former drama students from last year insisted that there should be a play even if there is no Drama class because of their love of acting. Katrina Labrador, 12th grade, said, “As an actor, I get to show people my talent and enjoy it.”
Director Martin said, “Drama is a place where people from all variety of groups within the school with the same interest can go create friendships they wouldn’t be able to create anywhere else.” Another actor stated, “Not having drama hurts.”
