This year, fall sports have accumulated an average 3.5 GPA. Of the 202 athletes who signed up for fall sports, 195 (or 96%) were academically eligible to participate, totaling 118 (58%) who achieved a 3.5 or greater. This was the highest reported GPA among fall sports from 2018 to 2023.
Each of the 118 athletes achieving a 3.5 or higher, “will earn… an NCS Scholar-athlete Certificate,” states SVHS athletic director Mike Boles. In the past, SVHS has dealt with issues regarding discipline and focus in classrooms. Mr. Boles recommends that students prioritize their school work and avoid procrastinating for this positive trend to continue into spring sports.
After asking Mr. Boles why he believes the GPA is higher this year in the fall, he stated that “prioritizing, coaches, and parents” were vital elements in assisting kids to focus on their work. Many varsity student-athletes boasted 4.0 GPAs including seniors Annabel Sebastiani, Lee Scott, and Trent Ohman. Scott and Ohman’s advice to students is to “do your work in class and do homework the day it is assigned.”
