The SVHS’s Color Guard is a new sports team added to SVHS’s athletic department. The team is led by head coach, Veronica Gray and assistant coach Mrs. Pencil. This is the sports first year at SVHS.
The color guards often perform routines with flags and sabers. They add a visual element to the high school band. The team currently has five people on the roster including, Vinnie Mansfield, junior, Abby Kalt-Alvarez, junior, Vicky Wence, Danica Labrador and Julian Borja.
We asked members of the Color Guard “What made you interested in the sport and what have you learned.” and “What was hard to learn and what was easy to learn?” Vinnie Mansfield, junior, responded with “What got me interested in the sport was its team work and the opportunities it gives. One of the things that really got my attention was the traveling. Mrs Gray once told us about the time she preformed under the Eiffel Tower with her color guard team when she was in high school. Color Guard taught me how to work with a team. The hardest thing for me to learn was the tosses. The first time I tried a toss it gave me a concussion. The easiest thing for me to learn was the spinning. It may be hard to learn at first with trying to avoid hitting yourself but once you get the hang of it, it is easy.”
