State Earthquake Drill Alert Causes Confusion

There was an Earthquake drill at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 19. The drill was performed by schools across the state as a part of the California ShakeOut.

The drill was a three-step process, in which students and teachers first responded to protocol by locking up their classes and receding under their desks for cover. The second stage of the drill was an evacuation of all classes to their given evacuation locations on campus. Finally, all students evacuated to the football field where they were sorted by grade level and last name.

With the recent earthquake alerts that have been issued via cell phone alerts, the recurring question of how students should respond to these alerts has risen.

In the future, students are advised to respond to these alerts with the drop-and-cover protocol implemented in earthquake drill instructions.
