“Trans rights are human rights! Trans rights are human rights!” If you were to drive past SVHS around 10 a.m. on Tues. Oct. 30, you would hear Sonoma students chanting such phrases in support of their peers.

Students gathered together with signs and flags to stand up to the Trump administration’s newest proposal regarding the choice of one’s gender. The proposal is attempting to define gender purely by sex and genitalia at birth, and put it in law under Title IX.

Cole Gorman, freshman, is openly transgender and identifies with he/him pronouns. “It makes me very angry,” Gorman shared. “I’m ready to stand up for our rights and use my voice.” He participated in the rally and is a member of GSA. He joined the club because he wanted to find a supportive group of friends that identify in the LGBTQ+ community.

Trump’s policy is distressing to many Americans, transgender and allies alike. Erica Green of The New York Times explained, “the agency’s proposed definition would define sex as either male or female, unchangeable, and determined by the genitals a person is born with.” This would take away the freedom that Americans hold to identify themselves as they choose.

Although California is a fairly open and accepting state, other states are not. Gorman expressed, “I’m ready to fight for change.” He is hopeful that this legislation won’t become reality, and if it does, he will be disappointed in our country.

This rally is not the first at SVHS and won’t be the last for students speaking out.
