A Momentous Start for the Lady Dragons
Varsity girls’ basketball is off to a phenomenal start with five wins and only one loss. The team is composed of SVHS veterans who have been active on the court for much of their high school careers. The girls have been putting in work year round as they all play club with each other, coached by the high school coach, Jann Thorpe. This has benefited them as they know each other’s play styles and can predict what one another will do next.
The girls’ first league game against The Santa Rosa Panthers was a decisive victory, ending in a score of 52-36. The girls dominated the court, locking down on defense, and also attacking the rim with every possible possession.
The girls’ next match-up was against Novato Hornets. The Dragons’ off-season work continued to pay off, beating Novato 60-15. Their lead started early in the game, pressing forward as they continued to build a larger and larger lead.
The Analy Tigers were the next school to fall to the Dragons. This was a very competitive game however the girls were able to pull away and walk off the court with the scoreboard reading 56-42. This started off the home tournament, titled the Dragons Classic, well, and they went on to win the semifinal 45-44 in a thriller against Montogomery.
San Domenico was the next opponent, in the championship of the Dragon Classic. This is so far the only loss that the girls’ varsity has taken this season so far resulting in an end score of 40-46. Although we lost this was not a forgettable game. The girls left everything on the court and did everything they could to win the tournament but it just was not enough to walk away with the win.
But, the Dragons quickly bounced back, most recently taking on the Terra-Linda Trojans. This was a comfortable win for the team, with a final score of 41-25. Although still early in the season it is looking like the girls are in very good shape for the rest of their season, with many home games and hope for a league championship on the checklist.
As I'm entering my senior year at SVHS, I know a lot of people. My focus will be on getting some great interviews and stories for the Dragon's Tale.
I am Ryder Calhoun, a writer for the Dragon's Tale newspaper, as well as a student and varsity athlete at Sonoma. I was part of the start-up of the varsity...
