United Nations Discuss Paris Accord

In wake of a worsening climate, the United Nations is holding a climate change conference in Katowice, Poland involving over 200 of the world’s largest countries. The US has decided to abstain from the conference.

The goal of the conference is to construct finer details of the Paris Accord, in order to promote real change. These details include reporting a country’s greenhouse gas emission count, and plans they create in order to reduce these emissions.

President Donald Trump has been a vocal opposer of the Paris Accord as he pulled the US out of the agreement in 2017 by stating, “the United States will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord but will begin negotiations to re-enter either the Paris Accord or a really entirely new transaction on terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people, its taxpayers.”

Due to the lengthy agenda of the conference, it was decided to start a day earlier on Dec. 2, in order to cover all agenda items

by the end date, Dec. 14.

Junior Reed Hewitt commented, “I hope the US rejoins the Paris Accord. It scares me that we aren’t doing anything to help the planet.”
