Gas Tax Causes Riot In France

Carbon emissions’ effect on the environment, as well as the atmosphere, has led to concerns in the 21st century. Gas prices in France are about $7.06 per gallon, and the price of fuel is planned to increase due to President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to cut carbon emissions and raise prices. According to CNBC’s news website, the public’s reaction consisted of “riots, protests and violence over fuel tax.”

In the US 2018 midterms, Proposition 6 in California addressed the voter approval for future gas and vehicle taxes. The proposition keeps the fuel and vehicle tax intact for the future. The question is, will residents of California react similarly to those in France? Or, has California adapted to the environmental change?

Patrick Sisson, writing for Curbed.com, revealed that “As of October 2017, the state has 337,482 zero-emission vehicles” on the road. Sisson admitted that California is on track “to succeed with its goal to have 1.5 million electric vehicles on the road by 2025.”

California’s progression with zero-emission vehicles is a positive sign for the future and should not lead to any major protest outbreaks. Even though fuel tax has the potential to rise, residents of California prove to be adapting for the sake of the environment.

President Macron made an executive decision on Dec. 5 to dispose the planned tax in fear of future violent outbreaks. He realized that the public’s reaction was expressive in a violent way. President Macron’s leadership skills might determine his future as France’s leader.
