Santa Tell Me What You’re Listening To!

Jingle bells are jingling and sleigh bells are ringing as students get into the holiday spirit by playing their favorite holiday songs.

A random sample of SVHS students favorite holiday music by Mason Phillips showed that the most popular holiday song was “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande receiving 27% of the votes. In second place was Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe,” receiving 7 votes out of 62 students surveyed.

On campus, pop songs have dominated the holiday playlists including Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe” and Ariana Grande’s “December.” Classic holiday songs like “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Jingle Bells” are still featured on students playlists but are not as prevalent as they used to be.

Senior Nicole Curreri commented that her favorite holiday song is, “St. Brick Intro” by Gucci Mane, later changing her choice to Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmas Time.”

Mixing up the holiday music trend, senior James Greenslade mentioned that his favorite holiday song is “Silent Night.”

Recently there has been a debate about whether the famous “Baby it’s Cold Outside” song should be played on public radio stations. The #MeToo Movement has created awareness about the lyrics to this song, seemingly about unwanted advances. Junior Sofia Portello commented that the song “is a little creepy.”

Whether playlists are filled with traditional holiday music or newer takes on classic songs, students are able to find comfort during the holiday season.
