Happy Holidays, But Which Holidays?

For many, winter is a time of coming together and celebrating the holidays with friends and family. With a blend of cultures throughout the SVHS campus, students celebrate all types of holidays during December.

December holds a variety of holidays. According to Herb Scribner, a Deseret News staff web writer, “there are… 14 religious holidays… in December,” later adding that, “the most celebrated of the 14 are Christmas and Hanukkah.”

Throughout the world, Christmas is the most celebrated holiday. A blog by Jan Meyer says, “9 in 10 people celebrate the holiday.” Christmas is the most common holiday celebrated at SVHS as well.

Freshman Camille Phillips says, “I celebrate by going to church and watching The Christmas Story on Christmas Eve, waking up early with my brother Christmas morning, and a with family lunch.”

Despite Christmas having the most representation at the SVHS campus, students of Jewish descent are also celebrating Hanukkah. Sophomore Ruby Eilert comments, “My family lights the menorah every night for eight days. We also sing the prayer and eat a soup and latkes dinner.”

No matter which holiday you celebrate during December, winter break is the perfect time to take a break from school, and enjoy the holiday season with friends and family.
