SVHS celebrated Mexican Independence Day on Tuesday at lunch in the H-wing.
Hosted by M.E.CH.A., Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, and Dragones Latinx, as well as set up by Leadership, the event celebrated the beginning of Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain, which started on September 16, 1810.
The conflict lasted for 11 years before the country finally became independent in 1821.
Senior Yomy Celias Casas, who is part of Leadership, said that she feels the event is important because the majority of SVHS’s students are Hispanic, and said that she feels the event is engaging and important in strengthening the school’s community.
The event was very popular among students, and featured food and drinks like nachos, paletas, and aguas frescas, as well as bracelets, stickers, tattoos, board games, a piñata, music, a folklórico performance, and decorations.

Juniors Marlen Balam and Julian Borja also attended the lunchtime event, describing it as “enjoyable,” “welcoming”, and “nice.” Borja mentioned that he enjoyed watching his friends who danced in the folklórico performance. Balam agreed and also said that she liked the decorations at the event, which consisted of colorful Papel Picado, Mexican flags, and other creative paper crafts.
