Sonoma Valley High School will have a slightly altered bell schedule when students return to campus in January after the winter break.
Many students at SVHS had struggled with this school year’s new schedule, which began in the fall. The fall schedule consisted of Monday, Tuesday, and Friday being C-days, Wednesdays as an A-day, and Thursdays a B-day. But the three straight hourlong periods that all occurred after lunch — Periods 4, 5, and 6 — led to long afternoons without breaks.
So in the spring semester, Period 4 will happen right after Period 3, before lunch. After lunch, students will have Periods 5 and 6.
Still, some students have complained that we now get out of school later than usual.
Jasmin Mendoza, a senior, said, “I like this schedule, I just dislike how we get home later than usual.”
There were also complaints that breaks are too short: “You barely come back from getting something to eat and, boom, it’s already time for class” Mendoza said.
The time of dismissal and the length of breaks will not change in the spring semester. The new schedule alleviates the stress that students with three consecutive AP courses currently have, allowing lunch to break up that time.
Slate 3 worked hard to get us this schedule change through meetings and advocated for what was best for the school community. Ultimately, the administration approved the change after issuing a survey to students and staff. At least 70 percent of students and staff voted for the change.
