Recent changes to the parking lot, such as new exiting routes and numbered spots, have affected more than just student drivers. Teachers, parents, and staff have expressed frustration regarding the recent changes. Molly Kiss, principal, states she made the changes because she wants traffic coming in two different directions and “has consulted with Sloescher, MNO (maintenance and operation), and talked to law enforcement” to ensure a safe and cohesive parking system.
Parent’s driving behaviors have caused issues for students as well. Ms. Kiss further explained that administration encourages parents who drop off or pick up their kids to park in a spot or wait by the nearby tennis courts. However, parents tend to park in students’ numbered spots, creating more confusion and preventing students from parking.
Some students feel the numbered parking spots are helpful. Fiona Lynch, a sophmore at SVHS, addded “It’s kinda nice, you don’t have to worry about someone parking in your spot.”
Teagan Rhodes, junior, explains “it takes me about 10-15 minutes to leave the parking lot everyday after school”. The changed exiting routes have lengthened the amount of time it takes for people to leave school which has raised a number of concerns for those who have sports, jobs, and other priorities immediately after school.
