Mexican Independence was celebrated in the H-wing, honoring the Latinx community at SVHS on September 15, 2023. More than a hundred students took part in face painting and munching on traditional Mexican foods. The event was put on by the school’s Latinx Club and featured a piñata students took turns hitting. Vicky Hernandez, our student voice, said that a committee in leadership partnered with the Hispanic club to organize the celebration.
There was a special appearance by five Adele students, dancing Baile Folklórico, a traditional Mexican dance. The dancers performed in the middle of the H-wing and were surrounded by a large audience cheering them on.
Briana Zenon, a member of the Dragones Latinx Club and a volunteer at the food and drink table, says that there were a lot of underclassmen that showed up, exclaiming that “the turnout is awesome” with more than one hundred people there.
Along with underclassmen, many faculty members came out to celebrate including Kamil Garcia, who runs the wellness center on campus. Garcia explained that she came out to see the kids and support the celebration of “everything the community has to offer for Latinx students”.
Mexican Independence Day is an annual celebration on Sept. 16 to memorialize the day Mexico gained independence from Spanish rule.
