Soundtrack to The Emotional Season Impacts Students

During the month of November, a few artists including Adele, Silk Sonic, and Taylor Swift released chart-topping albums. These artists released their albums within a few days of each other, and are bringing the emotion into the fall season. All three albums have separate perspectives and together represent different stages of a breakup.

Red (Taylor Version) is Taylor Swift’s re-recorded version of her album, Red, originally released in 2012. This album demonstrates the initial heartbreak and immediate feeling after a break up. Senior Isabelle Costanzo explained “Red (Taylor’s Version) is best to listen to right after the breakup because it starts with a song about falling in love and having hope for the relationship.” Although some songs are more upbeat like “22,” songs like “All Too Well” and “I Almost Do” help visualize and mark the start of the pain that will be endured after the breakup. Costanzo also explains that “the album is said not to be sonically cohesive, which can represent the different emotions you have after going through a breakup.”

Adele’s album, 30 represents the raw emotional heartache as well as the climax of the heartache. The first single that she released, “Easy On Me,” made many fans excited to hear the records that would be released with the rest of the album. Costanzo feels that “30 represents the deep pain felt after a breakup. Even those that can’t relate still feel every word she sings.” 30 was created for Adele to express all of the sadness she felt throughout her divorce and is the most raw and vulnerable album she has created. “The end of the album signifies starting to accept the breakup and being okay with it and yourself” says Costanzo.

Silk Sonic, the dynamic duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak, released An Evening With Silk Sonic, which represents the aftermath of a heartbreak. All of the upbeat R&B songs like “Skate” are uplifting and representative of happy moments in love. Senior Evelyn Martinez exclaimed that “songs like “Leave the Door Open” help make the transition from emotional to acceptance of a new beginning.” Although this album was released on Nov. 12, it does not encapsulate the feel of fall. An Evening With Silk Sonic’s ambiance would pair better with a summer release.
